For many years, Waikato Sunrise Rotary (WSR) has been dedicated to supporting youth across the Waikato, and our latest initiatives with Waikids are helping to ease some of the challenges tamariki face during their health journeys. Today, we are thrilled to see two meaningful projects come to life—both designed to provide comfort and support for young patients and their whaanau.

One of the standout projects is the provision of a model MRI, funded by WSR and provided by Siemens.

This child-friendly model not only helps tamariki understand the scanning process but also plays realistic MRI sounds, preparing them for the experience ahead. A few of our members even found themselves reliving their own memories of undergoing an MRI!

One particularly special aspect of this initiative is the paper model MRI that children can take home. This small but significant detail allows tamariki to share their experiences with extended family, school friends, and others who may not fully understand what they’re going through. By making their journey more relatable, we hope to ease some of the anxiety that often comes with medical procedures.

In addition to the model MRI, WSR has also helped create and decorate a family wellness room within Waikids. This space provides a much-needed sanctuary where children and their families can take a step back from the challenges of the ward, breathe, and recenter themselves. Sometimes, a quiet moment away from the medical environment can make a world of difference in a difficult time.

Beyond these two projects, WSR continues to provide emergency clothing for whaanau in the Waikids unit. For some, unexpected hospital stays or personal circumstances make it difficult to access essential clothing. By offering this support, we aim to help families maintain their dignity and focus on what truly matters—their child’s health and well-being.

These initiatives are just some of the ways WSR is making a tangible impact in the community. Every dollar raised and every volunteer hour given helps create moments of comfort and reassurance for those who need it most.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported these projects—together, we’re making a real difference for Waikato tamariki and their families.
