The year has started with a hiss and a roar, with stimulating speakers and a lot of conviviality within the club.
We have a very full program in the next few months, with many events to attend.
These include:
The Matamata Rotary Club is holding a "Concert by the Lake" in February 2017. This is on Sunday 19 February, and Raewyn Kirkman and Geoff Tizard are interested in making a group booking. Please contact either of them to arrange to go.
Rotary Foundation Centennial Appeal. This workshop will be held on 20 February 2017 at the Cosmopolitan Club in Claudelands, Hamilton. All Clubs are invited to come to this meeting to replace the normal weekly meeting. Time is 5.30pm to 6pm and will go to 8pm.
There will be no meal. There will be three presenters. Each Rotary Club member who
attends is expected to donate $26.50 to the Foundation and this will replace the cost of the
meal that we would have during this week.
Waikato Sunrise will have a normal meeting during this week.
District Training Assembly. This is on 6 May 2017. If the Club is to apply for a district grant then a member of the Club will need to attend a district training assembly.
Rotary Learning Initiative Training. This is on 7 May 2017 and will be held in Hamilton at Fairfield College. Parts I, II and III will be held at this time. Members of Waikato Sunrise would benefit from attending.
Golf Tournament. The Huntly Rotary Club is organising a golf tournament. It is an “Ambrose Event”, on 11 March 2017.

There was a recent article in the Waikato Times about a Rotary project called “Go Baby Go". This is a fund raising project where $1500 is raised, by Rotary, to buy an electric car for a disabled child. These individually customised miniature cars are able to be used in the house and also outside and give the children a certain sense of independence. They can also remotely controlled by the parents. It is a BMW initiative and supported by Rotary Clubs throughout New Zealand.
Recently, in Hamilton, a number of these cars (8) were donated to worthy recipients. Waikato Rotary Clubs were notified of this donation at the last minute and we have not had anything to do with the raising of funds.
Should this initiative continue in the Waikato area, it would be good for the Clubs to be involved and it would be a good project to raise funds for. These cars are configured for each individual child's disability.
Rotary Advertiser. The Rotorua Rotary Clubs have published an advertising supplement that was delivered to most households within the Rotorua area. It would not be difficult for the Waikato Clubs to copy this initiative and utilise a lot of the printed material that the Rotorua clubs use. It is hoped that advertising would pay for the publication of this (approximately $8,000). Advertising would initially be offered to Rotary Club members who have businesses that would benefit from it.
Balloons over Waikato takes place from Wednesday 22nd March to Sunday 26th March.
We need a significant club involvement with this project, and Geoff Tizard has already emailed to you the roles that he is looking to fill. It will be a significant event to raise the profile of the club. Proceeds of this will go to Hospice, a very worthwhile recipient of our efforts.
Police Person of the Year 2016. There have been three nominations and the selection and the awarding of this award will occur sometime in early 2017. Each Club is expected to donate $120 for this award, which will then be donated by the recipient to the worthy cause of his/her choice.
Te Rapa-Frankton Club Merger. This is occurring at present and the Clubs will be called Frankton-Te Rapa Rotary Club.
Area 1 Assistant Governor Replacement. Mike Cahill will do another year as Area Govenor. Normally the term is two years but Mike has been persuaded to do a third year. Leone Tisch is looking for a replacement for 2018. The area needs a good succession plan for the replacement of office holders.
Vocational Mentors.
The Graham Dingle Foundation is in the process of establishing mentors to help teenagers in choosing careers. Vicki Blundell, of Waikato Sunrise, is initiating this proposal. If you are interested in participating, please contact Vikki.
